The drinking row in Malaysia has taken yet another turn.Action will now be taken in the state of Selangor against
Muslims found drinking in public or working in premises selling or handling alcoholic drinks!
The penlties are seriously steep where an average income is RM 2500 per month. For drinking in public its up to Rm 3000 and or 2 years of jail sentence and for working in premises dealing in alcoholic drinks its up to RM 5000 and or 3years imprisonment!Who will remind Malaysia banning only encourages an act, such experiments have been done in other countries and failed.
The intention of the Government is to ‘cultivate good livelihood ‘for Muslims in accordance to their Islamic faith. The question is how would Muslims work in top hotels or pharmaceutical or beer factories? The interesting bit is, the enforcer would be mosque officials!Imagine the Imam leaving religious duties to hunt drunkards! The news has shocked many fearing its misuse more than its moral value.
But the most offended is the Sultan of Selangor Sharifuddin Idris. He has created a snag in its implementation for now and is seeking an explanation for announcing a law without his consent or discussion.Technically the Sultan is the head of Islam in the state and no law can be unilaterally passed without his consent. So for now one can have a beer and go to sleep who knows for how long such simple pleasures may last.
