Thailand and Cambodia reach agreement over Preah Vihear Temple

Thailand and Cambodia reached an agreement to withdraw their troops over the border temple of Preah Vihear under dispute territory. The issue came up when the temple was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site by UN in july 2008.UN pleaded efforts to preserve and develop the centuries old temple of Cambodia. This was challenged by Thailand claiming the temple and tanks rolled in and three Cambodians and one Thai lives were lost. The bombing and shelling has been going on for the last eight months.

The agreement reached between the Thai and Cambodian PM would cease fire immediately and the area will be demarcated for mine sweeping and the two countries will now work together to develop the area for tourism. The Supreme Commander of Thailand was met by Commander in Chief of Cambodia on his first visit and a joint declaration was made in a press conference to reiterate good cooperation and relations.Later The Thai supreme commander will be taken to the famous Ankor Wat Temple for a visit.

The significance of Preah Vihear temple lies in its remarkable pure khmer architecture both in plan and the detailed decoration .An 11th century temple although originating in 6th is dedicated to Lord Shiva and remarkably preserved because of its remoteness. The architectural complex is a series of sanctuaries linked by a system of pavement and staircases on an 800m long axis.It is adapted to natural environment and religious function of the temple.

Then we also have Ayodhya in Afganistan and Thailand claming to be the birth place of Lord Ram, care to take it back!!I appreciate the influence of Hinduism, Jains and Buddhist on south east Asia and its fantastic look at Ankor Wat or Burobodor etc. There is an extension of Oriya culture and craft on this region.

I would congratulate both the countries to come to a wise decision. Negotiation is always better than war. Great!
